A movie theater screening starts at 2:35pm. The movie lasts for 2 hours, 32 minutes after 23 minutes of previews. It takes 20 minutes to get home from the movie theater. What time should you tell your family that you’ll be home?

Answer: 5:50pm

One solution: Think of this as an addition problem with time, which is tricky because time is a base-60 system.

In order of occurrence:
Current time: 2h 35m
Preview: 0h 23m
Movie: 2h 32m
Drive home: 0h 20m

If we add up the hours we get 4h, and if we add up the minutes we get 110m. For every 60 minutes we must add another hour. Therefore our original answer of 4h 110m changes into 5h 50m. Converted back into the measure of time, we get 5:50pm.
